When you hear the words “compost toilet (http://www.networx.com/article/compost-toilets),” there’s a good chance you immediately begin imagining some sort of terrifying box with a hole in it you want nothing to do with. That’s certainly what I pictured. I envisioned a pungent wooden contraption used primarily by log-cabin dwelling, tie-dye clad, shoeless men who used to follow the Grateful Dead. So, when I was asked to interview the manager of a compost toilet manufacturer, I was fully prepared to respond to everything he said with, “Oh, cool. Gross.”

At this point I'm wondering about the quality of said compost, how it would be used/delt with, because most people are eating SAD and anything produced by that cannot be much good.

The people I know who are using composting toilets are also evolved enough to be eating organic.

Of course Islander, but if this were to ever be considered on a large scale basis, say with all new home & apt construction, then my concerns about people's diets would come into play.

I hear you...and I think the "eww" factor would prevent its ever being adopted on a wide scale.

I'm sure if they were referred to as 'dry toilets', or 'waterless toilets', the idea would be taken up much faster. It's the word compost that gives people the wrong idea. Wish I could afford one! But I am very mean with my water use - I go along with 'if it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down'!
