Warding off travel germs

Q: I'm dreading my upcoming vacation because I get a horrible sinus infection nearly every time I travel by plane. I have two questions: Why do I get these infections so often, and do you have any helpful hints for avoiding them?

Dr. Wright: Sinus and other upper respiratory infections occur so often following air travel because the air in the airplane cabin is recycled throughout the course of your trip. Any germs floating around in that air are also re- circulated the whole time. Plus, the air on planes tends to be much drier, which means your nose and mouth also become dry. Without the mucous and moisture usually present to "catch" them, bacteria have a better atmosphere for setting in and causing infection.

Approximately 1/2 hour before boarding, take 10 to 15 drops of potassium iodide (SSKI) in a few ounces of water. If necessary, repeat the dose every three to four hours while you're in the air. If you're going on a particularly long trip -- more than 12 hours -- it's best to limit the dose to 10 drops each time. And don't take any more after landing.

The SSKI will initially accumulate in all your respiratory secretions -- in your nose, throat, and lungs -- where it will either kill or severely inhibit any unfriendly germs you may inadvertently inhale. And that means you're not likely to catch a sinus infection. You may or may not notice a slight metallic taste in your mouth, but that's really the extent of the "side effects" for this use of SSKI.

One important note: If you're allergic to iodine, or even suspect you might be, do not use this treatment. True iodine allergy isn't very common, but it's still a good idea to check to make absolutely sure.

Potassium iodide (SSKI) is available through compounding pharmacies, some natural food stores, and the Tahoma Clinic Dispensary.

Carry a spray bottle of colloidal silver. Use it in public restrooms, on your hands when pushing a shopping cart, spray it in your eyes and nose and mouth when exposed to someone sick, and of course, take it regularly.

Aren't there different strengths of colloidal silver? How much should I take of what strength?

The brand I use has: Distilled water, silver in colloidal state at 13 parts per million in .007 micron size particles

I put it in a small bottle in my purse as a hand sanitizer and put it in an old nasal spray bottle use as nasal spray.

The directions on my bottle recommend a tablespoon a day, but at that strength you can safely take 3 times that much if you feel something narsty coming on or have been around sick people.

I'm wary of colloidal silver, but if you're keen on it then it's great. I tend to put about 6 or 7 drops of tea tree/malaleuca oil in a carrier base (don't use it straight on your skin cuz it's very drying and can damage your epidermis). Then I rub it around my nostrils and ears every hour or so to kill anything going in. And I take wet wipes with me and wipe the chair, arms, seat, remote control, TV... anything wipeable... and take them to the toilets with me and make sure I don't actually touch anything in there with my bare hands; always through a wet wipe with tea tree oil. And then when I get back I always use hand sanitiser gel as well [there's only one I can use though; it's unfragranced and pretty much pure alcohol with a bit of aloe vera gel].

Haven't been sick on a long-distance flight since I started doing that. It may make you look a bit paranoid but ah well, if it stops you getting sick it doesn't matter; won't see any of them once you land again and you'll be the healthy one!!
