I'm placing this letter from my Congressman here so it will be archived for future reference. (Bolding mine).

Dear Islander:

Thank you for contacting me regarding legislation impacting dietary supplements. One of the most important parts of my job is to hear the many perspectives from the people I represent. That's why I come back to Maine almost every single weekend - so I can stay in touch with what's on the minds of the people of Maine's Second Congressional District.

Encouraging preventative care such as healthy lifestyle choices and eating habits are a vital part of improving our Nation's health. The House is currently considering H.R. 3261, the Access to Medical Treatment Act, H.R. 3262, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) Full Implementation and Enforcement Act of 2009, and H.R. 3263, the Dietary Supplement Tax Fairness Act of 2009. The Access to Medical Treatment Act would permit an individual to be treated by a health care practitioner with any method of medical treatment the patient requests. The DSHEA Full Implementation and Enforcement Act would authorize and make appropriations to carry out the DSHEA and all applicable regulatory requirements for dietary supplements under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The Act would also expand research and development of consumer information on dietary supplements. The Dietary Supplement Tax Fairness Act would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to treat money spent on prescribed medical foods and dietary supplements as medical expenses, eligible for tax deduction.

I strongly support preventative care measures, and I believe that consumer access to different health care options improves our overall health care system. However, we must also ensure that consumers are protected from fraudulent claims by fully researching and regulating new health care methods as they enter the market. By fully funding research and enforcing existing rules, we can better protect the health and safety of the American public.

On July 20, 2009, H.R. 3261 and H.R. 3262 were referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce and H.R. 3263 was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means. Please know that I will keep your comments in mind as these bills make their way through the legislative process.

Thank you again for sharing your views with me. In addition, I also provide occasional email updates on a range of issues affecting people in Maine.
