I just came across this, but it is very interesting: The Wessels Living History Farm (http://www.livinghistoryfarm.org/farminginthe1920s.html) I've linked to the first of the history of farming. There are sections of it throughout. The forties section deals with the history of "Victory Gardens."

I may be the only one here old enough to actually remember Victory Gardens.
And gas rationing...and iceboxes...and saving tinfoil for the war effort...and blackouts every night...and spotting German planes from the silhouettes on the back of Wheaties boxes....and Walter Winchell with the war news at 6 p.m. Ah nostalgia....
