View Full Version : Have you made Greek yogurt?

My local supermarket does not carry a plain, unsweetened, unflavored Greek yogurt; I have to go to [choke] Wal-Mart, and it's $3.95 for a 16-oz. container. Yes, it's heavenly, but also pricey!

What W-M doesn't carry, but my local market does, is a 32-oz. plain cheap house brand yogurt. Not organic, but nothing in it but yogurt.

What I do: line a strainer with wet, wrung-out cheesecloth (the fine muslin kind, not the kind full of holes you can see through). Pour the 32 oz. of plain yogurt into it. Gather the ends of the cheesecloth and find a way to hang it in a cool place. In summer I run the ends up through the refrigerator shelving and tie them. Set a bowl (with or without strainer, it's really no longer needed) under the cheesecloth ball. I let mine drip for 24 hours and the finished product was more like a cream cheese. I suppose I could have stirred in a bit of the whey to loosen it up a bit. 32 oz. of product is now about 16 oz. of something much like Greek yogurt at a fraction of the price. I plan to drink the whey too. That may be the same stuff Mercola sells on his site....
