WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (KABC) -- Many people rely on vitamins to supplement their diets, but a new study found that those who store them in the refrigerator may not be getting their full effect.

Food scientists at Purdue University found that the refrigerator and bathrooms are the worst places to store vitamins and other medications - even if the bottle is tightly closed.

Many such pills are water-soluble so water from the humidity in these areas cause the vitamins to break down and lose nutritional value. Scientist recommend that you store your vitamins in a dry, well-ventilated place for maximum efficacy.

They probably will also retain their potency a lot better if stored in the dark.

That makes sense-I knew you were not to store them in the refridgerator, but now I know why.

Aaltrude has a good point-there are some that are sensitive to light (thinking B vitamins off the top of my head) and dark or indirect light is best.
Look for dark bottles as well.

Mine all come in light-excluding plastic bottles or dark glass, but they are also stored in cupboards which are, of course, dark.

But I also stored my fatty vites in the fridge to protect against rancidity. This still seems right to me. After all, they are tightly sealed. Am I really wrong?

What do the directions say to do? I have had some like cod liver oil say to refridgerate after opening....

Capsules contain fish oil. Directions say to store in a cool, dry place. Fridge is cool but not dry; but cover is tightly closed. So??

The problem is with water soluble vitamins in capsule or tablet form. Soft-gels with Omega 3s or fat soluble vitamins are fine in the fridge and in fact, it does reduce rancidity.
