View Full Version : Hi from south Texas
Hi, y'all, my name is Betsy and I just joined the other day. I was led to this site by Woozie, who I've known on-line for, gosh, must be 5 or 6 years now.
I am interested in a lot health and food issues, although I seem to alternate between trying to learn and banging my head against the wall or sticking it in the sand. banghead Oh, look, a smiley for that!
I never paid much attention to health issues for most of my life. During my smoking years I got bronchitis about once a year, and other than that never saw a doctor. About 6 years ago I decided I might have a thyroid problem, starting seeing doctors and ended up with a cancer diagnosis and had my thyroid removed. Then they said I had Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroid disease. Next was adrenal insufficiency and a sleep disorder, alpha wave intrusion. Enough already!
So I take Armour for the thyroid issues, and a sleep med off and on. The adrenals seem to be behaving at the moment. Last year I discovered Dr. Datis Kharrazian's book Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? and gave up gluten the first of this year. This year I discovered Robb Wolf and his Paleo Solution podcast and then book, and have been mostly grain and legume free for most of the year. Starting in 2011 I'm going to tighten up on the grains/legumes and eliminate dairy and eggs. We'll see if any of that does any good.
I've also cut down a lot on synthetic/chemical everything. I don't wear makeup, I make my own tooth powder, deoderant, hand lotion. I clean mostly with vinegar, baking soda and essential oils. I wash clothes with soap nuts.
For fun I like to read, watch a couple of TV shows, surf. For excercise I lift weights and do Crossfit. I'm almost 60, so I'm the token old lady in Crossfit class. :p
I guess that's enough for now.
Welcome! From another token old lady, me. :)
Bets!!!!! So happy to see you here. :kiss

Welcome, Betsy! You have been on an amazing journey to recover your health-many of the things that help you help
a lot of us on the forum. We have a Q & A section where you can post a question, also.
Hope y'all got sunshine-I looked out and we already have 3 inches here in West Virginia!

Welcome, Betsy! I'm so glad you found us. You'll meet a lot of kindred souls here who have been on similar journeys. And BTW, I think I hold the title of Oldest Fossil Here.
As for Reesacat, I think she's fibbing. I don't care what she says, you can't measure sunshine!
Smooches back at ya, Woozie. :)
Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. I'm looking forward to poking around and reading old posts.
Islander, I'm from CT originally, and my Mom grew up in Maine. We used to spend a couple of weeks every summer with Grandma and Grandpa in Sherman Station. Haven't been up there in over 30 years since they died, but I have fond memories of the spot.

Hi Betsy,
Where in TX do you live?
Samurai, I'm in San Antonio. I see you're in Dallas. We're almost neighbors!

OMG, a reunion!
OK, that would be it for our Texas quota. LOL :)

Wait a minute, what's your criterion? TX is rather a bit larger than, er, PA. Have you filled the PA quota singlehandedly?

Certainly I have, being somewhat larger than life, I am...:D

Canada's big enough to permit at least three, don't you think? I mean, we can afford to be generous to America's hat.

I've been feeling so lonely. Glad you are here. ;)
Hi Betsy, Welcome to the site. I see you are in San Antonio. I grew up in Dallas and went to UT in Austin. My Hubby type person grew up in Denison and also went to UT (where we originally met). About twice a year we do a mass visit of Dallas to see my folks, Houston to see his family and Austin to see our friends.
Samurai, I did not know you were from Texas. I'll have to pay closer attention to member info in the future. Hey have either of you ever been to a Buc-ee's? We went for the fist time last year and were... fascinated for want of a better word.
Um, no, I've never heard of a Buc-ee's. Dare I ask...?
Well, if you are ever on a road trip in TX keep your eyes peeled for one. It's a gas stop attraction. They have a website if you want to take a look and get an idea. Needless to say, when we stopped we lost at least on hour of time and we walked out with a black cowboy hat for my then six yr old son. The Buc-ees we stopped at even had an outdoor section that had furniture that was the epitome of TX style and rather surprisingly high end.
Cowhide with the hair still attached-toilet seat anyone?
LOL! I'll pass on the toilet seat. Actually, I'll pass on most of that Western decor. Must be my Yankee roots. My husband likes it, but he's a native Texan. ;)
Welcome Betsy from a member across the sea in Australia! Good to hear you are taking charge of your health (like I did) and all the best with your practices in 2011.:)
When my husband and I originally met each other, we were in Dallas. Does that count? Can I be an honorary Texan now? :)

Wait...I thought you said the TX quota was filled.
Hey wasn't there something about TX being a bigger state and needing a bigger representaion? :D
Absolutely! Where I work we have 3 different state codes for Texas to break it down. That's 3 times as many people. :D
Betsy, posted one minute ago??? What are you doing up at this fine hour? I'm taking a bit of a break while things are quiet at work, but soon things will be rolling.

Hi, Betsy. This is probably the wrong place to ask this question, but since I don't know the customary place to ask it, here goes: I'd love to know how you make your tooth powder and deodorant, to see if I can improve on mine. Of course, I love simple and low-work-input solutions, and mine are so simple (I use baking soda for both), that they're hard to improve on in that category, but I'd still like to know how you do yours.
