Here are some great links I found on Facebook for re-using pallets in multiple ways. An advisory copied from the poster's research: "[Pallets] are fumigated with Methyl Bromide, which is a massive bummer to use but i do not believe leaves much or any residue as it is a gas. It is a deadly gas, an Australian customs inspector was killed by it while inspecting a container shipped from America. It is also a massive bummer for the atmosphere and ozone in particular. Anyway, it fumigates the heck out of pallets and kills whatever critters or eggs might be shipped from continent to continent accidentally. Another way they are treated is by heat treatment which is much safer for the environment and customs inspectors. I will continue to look into it, but now it is my thinking that if they are not obviously treated wood by the greenish or brown color of it, and if it does not smell of chemicals (! we come equipped with an awesome olfactory based chemical warning system and should pay attention to it more often, both the odor and the intuitive factor connected with it) anyway, if it passes these tests, i think it is OK."

This is how to take them apart if one has a reciprocating saw and have a bunch of them to do. I love my reciprocating saw;
