I recently read a fairly reliable source that claimed that tea chelates iron. I drink at least 2 cups of tea a day...but between meals, not with food. Is tea interfering with my body's absorption of iron?

It certainly does, I'm afraid! Can't remember how exactly, but anybody with issues around iron absorption should cut down on the tea and up the vitamin C. Two cups isn't so bad, but if you're struggling with it maybe switch to a herbal tea for a few weeks?

Thanks. No, I have adequate iron and I want my green tea. And I take 6 grams of C so I should be all right. Just checking.

Just wondering, at our age why do we want to be absorbing more iron? Sorry if I have misunderstood in the first place.

I brought it up because occasionally when I go to donate blood, mine is borderline low. When I read about the tea connection, it prompted the question.

I get desiccated beef liver pills from Swansons to help my husband with chemo anemia (also eat beets, venison, eggs, cook in cast iron skillets).
They use beef from Argentina-not organic but supposedly grass-fed. http://www.swansonvitamins.com/SW1198/ItemDetail?n=0 |

I occasionally eat liver, I consume lots of dark greenies, and just to be safe, I have a dollop of blackstrap moleasses occasionally, and that seems to do it for me...but I increased my intake of green tea lately and thought I should check on the accuracy of that statement.
