Default Japan Chemical Plant Explosion: Radioactive Depleted Uranium on Site

Hard to find a coherent story on this. Evidently an explosion at a Japanese plant on April 22 destroyed roughly 3400 units of radioactive waste, also referred to as depleted uranium. Lots of videos on line but little in the way of hard facts. Dutchsinse reports (and shows images of) a DU cloud working its way east, passing over Hawaii now. Related links below the videos.

Posted below videos of the explosion and fire at the Iwakuni Otake Petrochemical Complex in Yamaguchi Prefecture in southwestern Japan late Sunday night after an explosion rocked the plant at 2:20 am, April 22, 2012, killing one worker, injuring eleven. The cause of the explosion is being reported as lighting. Also at the site, stored uranium for nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. The complex is reported as being used for the manufacture process of chemical adhesives.

Wow! Depleted Uraniun (DU) is nasty stuff! Some U.S. military members allege that DU was a factor in the health problems, known as the Gulf War Syndrome. DU was first used in the weapons used by the U.S. and Britain during the 1991 Persian Gulf War and since used in Afghanistan and Iraq. Many military members claim DU is the reason for multi-faceted health problems, but the government says no....uh huh!

Depleted uranium is an integral part of the rounds (3000 per minute) fired by the original CIWS, which is why it was called the "Vulcan Phalanx". This CIWS was installed on everything from the small FFG 7 class fast frigates to the aircraft carriers. These have been in use since at least the early 1980s.

I have seen stomach-turning full-color photos of infant birth defects caused by DU in Iraq. Unlike biological or chemical warfare, DU does not readily dissipate but lingers in the environment, causing repeated exposure. The collateral damage of DU is the worst and most inexcusable side effect of modern war. It should be prohibited by the Geneva Convention, and those who order its deployment hanged as war criminals.
