Riffing on his new book Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us (http://www.amazon.com/Salt-Sugar-Fat-Giants-Hooked/dp/1400069807), ace New York Times investigative reporter Michael Moss is suddenly everywhere—he's out with a blockbuster article (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/24/magazine/the-extraordinary-science-of-junk-food.html?ref=science&_r=0&pagewanted=all) in the Times Magazine and just appeared on Fresh Air (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/02/26/172969363/how-the-food-industry-manipulates-taste-buds-with-salt-sugar-fat).

I heard about 1/3 of the Terry Gross interview on "Fresh Air" while in the car. Luckily I had to wait for a 55-car freight train, or I would have missed more of it. We all know snack foods are "bad for us" but not necessarily why...or why they seem so addictive ("you can't eat just one"). I'm going to move this thread to the Member Recommendations forum because I think it's an informative gobstopper.

7. "Food manufacturers now spend nearly twice as much money on advertising their [breakfast] cereals as they do on the ingredients that go into them." This fact may be well known to others, but it dropped my jaw.

I found it jaw-dropping too!

I've requested the book through Interlibrary Loan (do you have a similar exchange program in Oz?) and find that there's a statewide waiting list!
