A significant finding from Washington State University shows that garlic is 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics at fighting disease causing bacteria commonly responsible for foodborne illness.

Their work was published recently in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy a follow-up to the author’s previous research in Applied and Environmental Microbiology which conclusively demonstrated that garlic concentrate was effective in inhibiting the growth of C. jejuni bacteria.

Garlic is probably nature’s most potent food. It is one of the reasons people who eat the Mediterranean diet live such long healthy lives. Garlic is also a powerful performer in the research lab.

This is a significant finding!! Hopefully, more people will consider using garlic before running for the antibiotics. Of equal significance, the research found that garlic also worked in a fraction of the time of the antibiotics. The only metabolic downside of consuming large amounts of raw garlic is it does thin your blood. So, if one is taking anticoagulant medication, for example, consuming large amounts of raw garlic may serve to thin the blood too much, which makes one more susceptible to excessive bleeding. Other than this, I can't think of another metabolic downside associated with taking garlic.

Bacteria cannot become resistant to garlic like they have to antibiotics because the allicin in crushed raw garlic kills in a more direct way than commercial antibiotics. Antibiotics depend on being able to chemically bond with a receptor on the surface of bacteria; allicin simply penetrates the bi-lipid cell walls and gets into the interior of the bacterium and causes it to swell up and burst, killing it. Bacteria cannot become resistant to that anymore than you or I can become immune to being stabbed or blown up.
