Dear Citizen for Health,

By now you are all familiar with the effort by the Corn Refiners Association (CRA) to change the name of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to "corn sugar". In March we alerted you to their petition to the FDA, which they claim is in the interest of "consumer clarity".

We will repeat a question here we've asked many times over: How can changing the name of a product consumers have become familiar with over nearly three decades actually lead to greater clarity?

Quite simply, it won't. It is a deceptive ploy by the CRA to hide an ingredient that grows more unpopular by the day. Sales of HFCS are down 11% and an ever-increasing number of manufacturers, markets, and schools are rushing to eliminate the man-made sweetener. The more aware and informed consumers become about HFCS, the more they seek alternatives or avoid products containing HFCS altogether. The CRA is feeling the pinch and desperate to protect its bottom line.
CFH is leading the way in the fight against the CRA's duplicity. Last week we launched a new website dedicated to protecting your right to know what is contained in what you eat and drink - FoodIdentityTheft.com (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=C4xfFDDS7xkypz0O9BjMBZjz9Vm%2B8N1F) - and CFH supporters have sent more than 21,000 messages to decision-makers, from Congress to the FDA, urging them to deny the CRA's petition.

This week CFH submitted its official comments to the FDA, and you can read the letter here (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=s%2B%2FpJA%2Fmw543KqN6ao4E5pjz9Vm%2B8N1F).

Please take a moment now and submit your own comments to the FDA telling them to resist this "corn sugar sham".
If you've already sent a message, do it again! Consumers' comments are a critical part of our multi-pronged campaign to preserve your access to truthful, non-misleading health and nutritional information. Also be sure to check back often at Citizens.org (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=4dJVAAsihISFy9qtvTBCup8UJomik3eM) and FoodIdentityTheft.com (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=kE%2Bno2Ksnd3KSbhRja1dF5jz9Vm%2B8N1F) for updates and opportunities to take action.

As always, thanks for your participation,

The Citizens for Health Team

Here's my comment. Feel free to plagiarize, although your original statement will probably carry more weight.

The Corn Refiners Association petition to re-name High Fructose Corn Syrup to "corn sugar" is a transparent effort to disguise the existence of this demonstrably unhealthful food additive. It's past time for the Corn Refiners to accept that consumers are rejecting their product and that more and more food processors, concerned with market share, are eliminating it and saying so on the label in big bold fonts. Please, do the right thing and refuse this nonsensical name change.
