BERTHOUD, Colo. -- A Berthoud beekeeper could be at risk of losing her business after a series of overnight thefts caught on video.
For more than 20 years, Marie Koolstra has operated a self-serve honey kiosk outside of her home off Colorado Highway 56.
The box is constantly stocked with honey produced at Koolstra's farm, and includes a drop-box for people to leave money.
"When you have a self-serve box, you are vulnerable," she said. "You're at the mercy of trust."
Over the years, she says a bottle or two have gone missing, but this year, those thefts have become more frequent.

I suppose in this day 'n age, having that self-help, honor system kiosk out front by the road is inviting trouble. You cannot imagine just how many honey and beehive thefts there are. Just do an online search like, <honey theft hives>, it's gotten as bad as cattle rustling.

Supplying a stand with produce and a cashbox has been a long Maine tradition. Not anymore. Even here, thieves take advantage and coin drops have to be locked and secured. Says a lot about our "American values," don't you think?
I'll bet facial recognition software (matching with his driver's license) could nail that midnight self-service guy!

Happening in Oz also. In my area, all the 'serve yourself stands are gone. One exception, where you have to go up the drive and the shed is next to the house. I'll have to ask if she has had any theft.
