Default How to Respond to Comments About Your Grain Free Diet

Top 8 Most Common Reactions to Your Grain-Free Diet (and How to Respond)
As I’m sure you’ve seen, eyes raise and questions arise when you order a burger wrapped in lettuce or discard a “wrap” and eat the contents. And then, when you answer with ”Oh, I don’t eat grains,” minds boggle and mouths gape as they stumble to grasp the notion of someone who doesn’t eat bread or pasta. Eventually, though, they fire off responses, challenges, questions, and proclamations. This isn’t right, this isn’t possible, this doesn’t agree with their idea of how people should eat. It just isn’t normal. You’re not normal, and you should be ashamed of yourself for introducing a new paradigm. But not all are personally offended by your decision. Some are honestly curious and flabbergasted. Some just want to know why someone would give up grains and how they get along without them.

Didn't read the article because I'm pressed for time, but also because I do not have this problem. Maybe it's because of who I associate with? Some are vegetarians, some are vegans, one at least is dairy intolerant and I'm diabetic & gluten-intolerant. Raises no eyebrows. Hosting a potluck here in 2 weeks and everyone knows what not to bring!

Good suggestions for responses. I don't often gets comments on my eating habits either. I also still eat some grains. However, anytime someone comments, I see it as an open door to educate.
I have my own special ways of dealing with the "everything in moderation comment" though. It's one of my biggest pet peeves. One response is simply, "What is moderation?" What one may consider moderate may not be moderate at all, or not moderate to me/others. Another response is, "Really? So, child molestation is okay as long as it's in moderation???" - I personally like the snark value of this one. A final one is, "That would mean moderation in moderation, which comes around to mean not everything in moderation after all" - I haven't had a chance to use this one yet. It's my newest.

I've frequently gotten all kinds of comments on grain free etc. I try to educate but honestly, most don't want to be educated. When I say I have celiac disease and trying to prevent diabetes, much more acceptable. However, my family where I just moved to is very accepting. They are also asking lots of questions. Also found out that they read a lot of my posts and are trying to make a few changes. So, I've been having an impact I had no idea I was having.

I've been treated this way as long as I can remember. So much so that when people DO think I'm normal (when I'm not acting) it scares me. I generally don't eat with other people outside of my immediate family. People tend to feel threatened by what they don't understand.

    Mellow, I'm happy for you!
That's a great example of how our words (and actions) make a difference long after the moment is over. It's good to be reminded that words have power and that what we say often influences others in surprising and unexpected ways.

Probably some primitive "you're not in my tribe/clan" thing so you may be dangerous attitude. People also don't usually think clearly when they're afraid either.

In the long term, planting the seeds is likely to be far more effective than taking an evangelical stance.

I agree. And it's less confrontational (which usually doesn't turn out very well -- kind of like war).

Thanks y'all Yes, being evangelical in the beginning backfired, lol. I have been delighted hearing my brother and SIL talking though and my oldest daughter is interested.

I had a looong conversation today with a health professional. I had a bone scan (details elsewhere) and the results were so good that the scanner (a woman, not a machine) was intensely interested in my diet and lifestyle. She listened raptly & asked questions...more in Blogspot.
