Default Grape Seed Extract Disables Virus Responsible For Half of All Food-Borne Illnesses

Norovirus causes more than half of all food-born illnesses in the United States, and is the second greatest source of reported food borne illness outbreaks in the European Union. Researchers from Belgium found that grape seed extract could disable the virus.
Previous studies have found that grape seed extract can lower blood pressure and kills squamous cell carcinoma cells, while leaving healthy cells unharmed. The most recent study concluded that grape seed extract could reduce the infectivity of Norovirus surrogates (Norovirus surrogates are viruses that share pathological and/or biological features with human norovirus). Dan Li of Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium and collaborators have shown that grape seed extract does so by denaturing the capsid protein, which is the coat of the virus, thereby disabling the virus.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (or 50 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne illnesses. So, it is great news that grape seed extract could reduce some of the viruses that contribute to these illnesses.

In at least one lab study, grape seed extract also defeated human leukemia cells by causing them to destroy themselves, a process called apoptosis.

Induction of Apoptosis in Human Leukemia Cells by Grape Seed Extract Occurs via Activation of c-Jun NH2-Terminal Kinase http://clincancerres.aacrjournals.or...1/140.abstract
