Default Flu, Viruses, and Vitamin C Megadoses: A Personal Statement

This is so well said and so thoroughly documented that I have made it a sticky. It could be reprinted in its entirety but to save space, I've linked to the original.

(OMNS, November 17, 2009) Like most Americans, throughout most of my life I have occasionally been down with a virus. But for a long time, a simple cold for me started as a headache, sore throat and congestion in my nasal passages, and typically progressed to prolonged infection in my lungs, and a terrible cough. The whole experience took up to two weeks for recovery from the virus, and several more weeks for my lungs to recover.

In his book Vitamin C and the Common Cold (1), Linus Pauling explained that vitamin C, taken at the proper dose, can prevent a virus from taking hold in the body. This pioneering book, written back in 1970, was ignored by many doctors but was well-received by the public. One chemistry professor told me that he had heard of Pauling's book and the vitamin C therapy but didn't think taking a big dose of an acid, even a mild one like ascorbic acid, would be good for the body. As for me, I imagined Pauling was probably correct about the details he had researched, because he was a renowned scientist and knew much more than most about biochemistry. Perhaps, I thought, he had simply gotten some of the medical details wrong or had missed some of the important studies about the effects of vitamins. But I started taking 1,000 mg of vitamin C every day and kept this up for several decades.

Excellent article Islander! I imagine vitamin D would help too - I certainly rely on it to prevent colds and 'flu.

Perhaps people finally will begin to pay attention to the work of Linus Pauling. For years it became fashionable to mock his research, as though anyone knew any better. I still have the book How to Live Longer and Feel Better, and reread portions of it from time to time. This book, although published many years ago, pertains to much more than the importance of ascorbate.

I finally put this to the test myself, having read about it over the years. I have not had a cold for at least five years, so I was disappointed to feel one coming on three days ago. I normally take 3g Vitamin C everyday, spaced out, and 5 000iu Vitamin D. (Though I recently dropped to 5 000 every other day).

I started to take 1mg vitamin C roughly every hour, and by day three it has just about gone. I still feel a bit tired and heavy-eyed, but I haven't even needed to use tissues! Like the author, colds for me usually turn into bronchitis, and in one case pneumonia, so this is an enormous relief. I do feel though that regular Vitamin C and D meant this was a milder than usual cold, so easier to deal with.

Julieanne, I'm glad to hear that the vitamin C therapy worked for you. But I wonder, did you mean 1 mg per hour? Because I take a gram an hour right up until bedtime, and usually by the next morning all symptoms are gone. No matter how much C I consume in a day, I have never reached bowel tolerance.

Oops, yes, a gram an hour. It wasn't even all that regular, as I was visiting family on the second day and got distracted. But it worked anyway, and I only had very mild diarrhoea next day.
