Default Why Canola Oil Is Not A Health Food

Recently, my husband wanted me to replicate an Italian salad dressing that he’d bought at a restaurant. In order to honor the integrity of his opinionated taste buds, I discerned that I needed a really clean tasting oil, so I brought out some canola oil that was properly stored in a dark cool place. The canola oil looked light and pure, but it smelled “off” to me. I tasted it, and it had a strong lip recoiling flavor. I suspected it was rancid. So, like any good researcher would do, I enlisted my husband and son as my personal kitchen lab rats. Both tasted it and thought it was fine.

I disagree with one thing in the article. She states you shouldn't cook with EVOO but you can. It may lose some aroma and taste but it is pretty stable below its smoke point and isn't damaged by low or medium heat. The smoke point varies considerably by brand however and is dependent on acidity. A low acid olive oil has a much higher smoke point than the cheap higher acidity grocery store EVOOs. So, once again, know what you are consuming.

I agree with Mellow. Olive oil has been used forever and a year in Europe for cooking. Avocado oil seems to be very popular right now.

A few months ago, I was involved in a gmo corn forum on merc, touting the fact that I was eating the "Garden of Eatin" organic blue corn chips that were also gf and non gmo. Well lo n behold, another poster challenged me on the basis that the product was made with canola oil. The ingredients label reads; "Organic blue corn, expeller pressed conola oil and/or safflower oil and/or sunflower oil. Well taking heed, I checked all the other organic corn chips at my food co-op and every one of the other 4 brands sold there used canola oil. WOW!. Then I decided to see if there was such a thing as organic BAKED corn chips. I discovered such a product on line, with the ingredients showing canola oil. I guess I wrongly figured that being baked would eliminate not only canola oil, but ANY cooking oil. Go figure.

Alden, it sounds as if you didn't read the article, or you would not be standing up for "healthy" canola oil.

No need to eat canola oil at all, when there are much healther alternatives like olive and coconut oil.
