Default ADHD Symptoms Persist For Most Young Children Despite Treatment

Nine out of 10 young children with moderate to severe attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) continue to experience serious, often severe symptoms and impairment long after their original diagnoses and, in many cases, despite treatment, according to a federally funded multi-center study led by investigators at Johns Hopkins Children's Center.
The study, published online Feb. 11 in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, is the largest long-term analysis to date of preschoolers with ADHD, the investigators say, and sheds much-needed light on the natural course of a condition that is being diagnosed at an increasingly earlier age.

This makes me so angry!!! Whine whine whine that meds are NOT effective but never once address the most likely cause....a crappy diet full of sugar, preservatives, toxins etc. No, that's too simple, just more and better drugs right?

My grandson just turned 7. I'd say he's pretty severe BUT, as long as my daughter keeps triggers out of his diet, he has almost no symptoms. Things get out of control especially when he gets corn or MSG or lots of sugar. Corn is the insidious one; it's in everything. For example, he literally went crazy after Thanksgiving. I kept telling her to look at labels of everything in the house. In January, she discovered that the confectioner's sugar she had had corn starch.

I've been in so many nutrition groups, especially GAPS, where the changes in kids whose diets were controlled were almost miraculous.

I found this chilling...the article goes on to state:

"The study shows that nearly 90 percent of the 186 youngsters followed continued to struggle with ADHD symptoms six years after diagnosis. Children taking ADHD medication had just as severe symptoms as those who were medication-free, the study found."

Those drugs have very serious side effects and this study says they are not helping......many alternate health practitioners feel diet/food allergies are a large part of the problem with ADHD.

I have seen friend's children and grandchildren greatly improve ADHD symtoms by removing gluten/grains, dairy, MSG and other artificial chemicals such as artificial sweeteners, and other trigger foods. Many people have good success with the GAPS diet also.

Thank you Julieanne for the great article!

I have two friends that have their kids on legalized speed because they don't realize that it could all be fixed with food. Both are professionals in the health industry, and because my education is in finance/ business, I guess what I say holds little weight. Yet, my daughter is slim, lovely, happy, and has no "ADD". She does however, have teenager-smart-mouth-itis-syndrome.... ***sigh***

The smarter the mother the more clever the TSMS -- something to do with DNA, I guess.

Diet helps my husband more than any drug ever did; but it's still a major problem. Maybe his diet is not holy enough.
Neither of my daughters have ADHD either. Thank God.
