Default The Science On Acai Berries

    Dr. Michael Greger
    March 29, 2013

An independent review of the effects of açaÃ* berries was recently published, which included studies on immune function, arthritis, and metabolic parameters.

The “Evidence-Based Systematic Review of Acai” was recently issued by the Natural Standards Research Collaboration (NSRC), an impartial scientific body that refuses to take support from product manufacturers. They are cited by the World Health Organization as one of the most authoritative sources on such matters. What did the NSRC find?

Whenever a new purported superfood hits the market, the first thing researchers tend to do is look at its chemistry such as its antioxidant capacity, which was done back in 2006.

Thanks for the article, Julieanne. I've tried acai juice, briefly. It was was fairly expensive and contained mostly blueberry juice and a few other things. Not a bad product either taste- or health-wise, but the acai content probably wasn't high enough to have a noticeable effect of any kind. A quart bottle of pure acai juice was $32 at my local Sprouts store. At that price I decided to pass.

I make an effort not to buy into the latest "in" health product propaganda and never tried Mona Vie for the same reason, although an acquaintance/distributor swears by it and tried to get me started on it. Thing is, there are many superfoods available that are a lot cheaper and probably at least as healthful as acai berries.

I know it's rated super high for its antioxidant value, but blueberries are almost as high and I have a freezer full of organic wild ones. I have to settle for what's both local and affordable. Probably a shot of pure acai juice would be beneficial but I like to cycle through foods, and I sample my way through a lot of antioxidant-rich foods and supplements.

It does appear to have more than just antioxidants though:

'....clinical study investigated the effects of açaÃ* berries on metabolic parameters. Ten overweight folks were given two packs of frozen acai pulp every day for a month. Even though they were allowed to take it with sugar, their fasting blood sugars dropped, as well as their insulin levels and cholesterol. It appeared to significantly blunt the sugar spike caused by a standardized meal–all without any obvious adverse effects.'

I wonder what the juice equivalent of "two packs of frozen acai pulp" would be? Or where can I get acai pulp?
