Default Antidepressants No Better Than Placebo: JAMA Study

    Dr. Jeffrey Dach, MD
    Friday, November 8th 2013

A study just published in JAMA Jan 5, reported that SSRI antidepressants are no better than placebo for most cases of depression. The authors reviewed 30 years of data and concluded that "the benefit of antidepressant medication compared with placebo may be minimal or nonexistent in patients with mild or moderate symptoms".

Better than Placebo for Severe Depression

I should add that the study found antidepressants work better than placebo for severe depression. This is not surprising, since virtually any psycho-stimulant can be found useful for the most the severely depressed patient.

Studies have shown that natural remedies can work as well as SSRI antidepressants in some individuals with mild to moderate depression. For example, folic acid has proven effective for antepartum depression (depression during pregnancy). In addition, omega-3 fish oil and oregano oil have been shown to increase the activity of serotonin in the brain, which improves the mood of the individual. As I understand it, this is what SSRI antidepressants, like zoloft, prozac, paxil, etc. are suppose to do. I would try natural remedies before resorting to antidepressants, especially given the study cited above.

St. John's Wort has also been proven effective for mild to moderate depression. And of course, sunshine and vigorous exercise, even if only 20 minutes' worth, are mood elevators.

Agreed. Simply taking a brisk walk is a great mood lifter.
