Default Why Women Should Eat More Potassium After Menopause

What do baked potatoes, bananas, white beans, tomato paste, and dried apricots have in common?
Yes, they taste great. But more than that, they are all rich sources of potassium.
This vital mineral has long been known to help reduce high blood pressure. A recent study conducted by Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York highlights another important health benefit of dietary potassium: its effectiveness in preventing stroke in women after menopause.
The 11 year study of 90,137 postmenopausal women, ages 50 to 79 established that women who ate the most potassium were 12 percent less likely to suffer stroke in general and 16 percent less likely to suffer ischemic stroke than women who ate the least. All of these women were stroke-free when the study began, and each one consumed potassium through their diet, not supplements.

Interesting article, but it does not mention the issue of most high-potassium foods being quite high in easily metabolized carbohydrates.

Organic plant foods in general have good levels of potassium and magnesium and other minerals — like dark leafy greens — that don't have to be high in carbohydrates.

I didn't see avocados on the list. I eat a banana and avocado everyday unless I cannot get rip ones. Dark leafy greens are definitely everyday.
One word of caution. I didn't think it was possible to get too much potassium from food, but I did have a pt once that had critically elevated potassium from drinking copious amounts of orange juice.

Hypertension medication that contains "hydrochlorothiazide" (abbreviated HCTZ, HCT, or HZT) is a diuretic that may reduce your potassium levels. So, if you're on high blood pressure meds with HCTZ and your potassium levels are low, you may want to switch to a blood pressure med without HCTZ. Many of these meds are manufactured with and without HCTZ. So, switching meds is fairly simple.

Bmc, what were the symptoms of too much potassium? My husband eats A LOT of bananas, so I'd like to be aware of the downsides.
