Default Who in Their Right Mind Freezes a Lemon?

    HESH GOLDSTEIN

“A new study has shown for the first time how limonoids, natural compounds present in lemons and other citrus fruit, impede both ER+ and ER- breast cancer cell growth. This sheds new light on the importance of citrus fruit for breast cancer prevention and supports past studies which showed fruit consumption may lower breast cancer risk.(1)”

All kinds of people are saying that the entire lemon should be used with nothing wasted. Not only for the obvious health benefits but also for the amazing taste!

    How?

Simple, take a ORGANIC lemon, wash it, and then put it in the freezer. Once it is frozen you get whatever is necessary to grate or shred the whole lemon without even peeling it first.

Then sprinkle it on your salad, ice cream, soup, cereals, noodles, spaghetti sauce, or whatever. No holds barred. What you will experience is that whatever you sprinkle it on will take on a taste you may never have experienced before.

So simple, yet so awesome. If ever there was a good example of Hippocrates saying, "'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.', then this has to be one of the best.

When I read this article, I was left wondering whether freezing and using a lime in the way would be equally effective. While an organic lemon might difficult to obtain, many organic limes will fall off our tree, to be gathered up each morning.

I would think it would work Maurya. Could you try it and see how your body likes it? If it tastes good that tells me therre are still bioavailable nutrients in it. I am going to try it today with an organic lemon and see how it works.

I rely greatly on frozen berries to make frozen yogurt, so I'm anxious to try a frozen lemon with that process, in one way or another.

I occasionally find organic lemons on the half-price "must-go" produce table at my supermarket, so I'm looking forward to trying this too!

Hmm. New thing to try. I can grate it into our smoothies and maybe on salad also. Oh, on sauteed veggies too.

Very interesting! I'm so cross-cultural that I think I'm a bit confused about the difference between lemons and limes. The only things that look like what I called lemons when I was growing up in the US are expensive and imported (from Italy, I think, but I'm not sure, 'cause we don't even see them very often around here) and not organic. But there are two fruits they call lemons here, which are readily available organic. One of them looks a lot like what I used to call a lime, and the other one looks like a cross between a lime and an orange, and smells like household cleaner. But that's because they use it to scent household cleaners, ha! But I still don't like that one. I suppose the other one might work this way for me, though. I guess this is basically the same question Maurya asked. Surely their properties are similar?

bmc, don't forget fish! Maybe stir-frys?

Patty, I can taste the difference between lemons and limes, but they have so much in common that I don't see why they can't be interchangeable.

Thanks, Islander. I can always count on you for a common sense answer. I don't have much choice, anyway. By the way, the lemons that look like limes here are called "Tahiti lemons".

Hmm, yes. We don't do much fish now though. Between the expense of wild caught and trying to buy fish that is not over harvested or radioactive, it's a challenge these days to get it.

Patty, in that case, they are definitely limes. I grow them!

bmc, I'm fortunate to live close to the Maine coast where I can access local shrimp and sardines, as well as wild-caught haddock, hake, cusk etc. Further, my supermarket puts aging fish on a half-price display where I can get the fresh fish above as well as Alaskan coho salmon from time to time...low in mercury, not irradiated.

This is cool, but are we to grate the rind and seeds along with the rest of the lemon? I suppose I'm fine with the seeds, but when zesting any fruit, one should avoid grating int the bitter white part. This part is undesirable, and can destroy a dish. Am I missing something?

I did it last night over just plain chicken and it was good. I think the amount of white part was very little — I did taste a bit of bitter though. You might need to try it and see how your palate reacts.
