Default Is There Gender Bias In The Health Industry?

Women’s health issues have a long history of being ignored, or misdiagnosed, by medical professionals.

For instance, female hysteria was the first mental disorder attributed solely to women (thanks to Freud) and has a 4000-year-old history. Its cause was attributed to a wandering womb – as in medical experts thought women’s wombs moved through their bodies – and was considered to be extremely common.
Symptoms included nervousness, sexual desires (because that’s not normal, right?) and emotional outbursts. Often times other issues were attributed to female hysteria and thus went untreated. Common cures for hysteria ranged from abstinence to vibrators.
While we know that female hysteria doesn’t actually exist and the term is no longer used, we do have evidence to suggest that real women’s health issues still go unnoticed because professionals tell women it’s all in their heads.

I have had that experience only once. My Irish husband adopted my two daughters by a previous marriage, but we wanted to have two boys together. The second one was slow to
"take" (I was 41 or 42) so I wanted a consult with the visiting OB-GYN at our rural hospital. He asked how many children I had. I said, "Three."
    Him: "And you want more?"
What I wanted was none of his damned business. I wanted his medical advice but I immediately lost interest in hearing it.

BTW, we did get our 2 boys, 4 years apart.

I have definitely had the experience of not being taken seriously. Discussed this with a friend who sees the same doctor (I no longer see) and she had no problems. But, when she visits the doc she accompanies her husband, as it's John who is being treated.

He doesn't sneer at her use of alternatives, or dismiss his complaints. I wonder if any man has ever been told it's all in their head?

"It's all in your head" is MD speak for "I don't know." There's an awful lot that they don't know.

Good article — I have seen especially with chronic illness such as CFIDS where there are no reliable blood tests women are dismissed with "it's all in your head" most of the time and spend thousands of dollars and go through many doctors to get a diagnosis.

I agree male doctors tend to be generally dismissive of women. I wonder..do female doctors mistreat women too? If not, I wonder why more women don't patronize female doctors. Most of the women I know will only visit a male doctor. Go figure, huh?

Mr Wizard, I have been dismissed by a woman doctor, who practically tore up the stuff I printed off the net (re HRT), she was so rude. The interesting thing is the topic was all over the media the following week,so I wonder what she made of that?

As for women only visiting male doctors, I think that''s a cultural thing that will go in time. I don't know if it's any different in the US, but women docs are as scarce as hen's teeth in my locality.
