    Default Human Studies Condemn Ultrasound

    Dr. Kelly Brogan, M.D.

When it comes to pregnancy, this intervention has slipped stealthily into the experience of nearly every pregnant woman alive today. But is it safe for expectant mothers or their babies?

We want to trust. We want, almost need, to believe that medical and pharmaceutical interventions have been vetted. When our doctors tell us not to worry, we want to take their word for it.

Unfortunately, history has shown us that every recalled drug, every banned intervention, from Vioxx to shoe-store foot x-rays bore government-approved claims for safety and efficacy before they were pulled from the market.

    Ultrasound may be no different.

Even the name seems gentle, doesn't it? Ultrasound. It evokes the spa-like experience of the dark, quiet room, the painless glide of the wand over the skin. When it comes to pregnancy, this intervention has slipped stealthily into the experience of nearly every pregnant woman alive today.

This really caught my attention. I thought ultrasounds (sonograms) were virtually harmless. I called my daughter after reading this because she gave birth a little over 2 years ago. She said she had 1 ultrasound her entire pregnancy. My understanding is 1 or 2 per pregnancy appears to be the norm, unless there are concerns and then there could be more. The suggested limits on frequency and the length of time are very instructive. This was a real eye opener for a medical procedure I believed was virtually safe for the mother and fetus. Thanks for sharing.

I've known about the risks of ultrasounds for some time; fortunately, they hadn't been invented back when I was having babies. I tolerated no interventions in my labor, and even gave them attitude about placing an external fetal heartbeat monitor across my belly! I'm doin' this by myself, thankyouverymuch!

I detested those fetal heartbeat monitors.

I only had one ultrasound with my second pregnancy (doc thought I might be carrying twins) -- zero with my first. I instinctively didn't trust them.

There is far too much interest on the part of OB-GYNs in pathologizing a perfectly normal process that has brought our species through roughly 4 million years of evolution. Stay out of my uterus! And my vagina too — no episiotomy!
