Glaucoma leads to incurable blindness. There are no early warning signs. Half of people with the disease don't even know they have it. Changing your diet can cut your risk.
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world after cataracts. It's a neurological disorder that leads to deterioration of the optic nerve which connects your eyes to your brain. Eventually it leads to irreversible blindness.
It's estimated that 60 million people in the world and three million in the U.S. have glaucoma. But only half of those with the condition know they have it. The cause is not known and there are no early warning signs or symptoms.

This article turns out to be similar to one I posted a week ago in the Nutrition in General forum, emphasizing prevention of both glaucoma and macular degeneration by eating lots of dark green leafy vegetables — specifically collards and kale.

I suppose because I wore glasses most of my life, I get an annual check-up from the eye doctor, and it always includes a test for glaucoma. So far I'm doing just fine, no signs at all. ( I no longer wear glasses; advancing age has corrected my nearsightedness. Now I have to wear reading glasses instead!)

Funny story: When my last pair of glasses (trifocals) bit the dust after many years of wear, the cost for a new pair was just too dear, so I bought an inexpensive pair of reading glasses, and never looked back. Happy to be done with all of that!
