Default Dangerous Heat Wave to Grip the U.S.: 10 Ways to Survive Extreme Heat

Brenda Ekwurzel, Union of Concerned Scientists
    June 16, 2016

The U.S. National Weather Service heat index forecast for June 18 looks scary. It indicates a dangerous situation that everyone who lives in the red areas in the map below should take steps to prepare for. I am not kidding. Extreme heat can be life threatening if not taken seriously.
I used to not pay as much attention to extreme heat until one dangerous day in July. A medical practitioner was collecting a small blood sample for a portable testing device and asked me: do you have ringing in your ears? With sweat pouring into my eyes—and a pounding headache slowing my thinking—I wearily answered yes.

I have often thought that not all ringing in the ears is tinnitus. I wish the article had elaborated a little more.

As a "tropical kid" I had thought that I had all of this heat stuff all in one sock. I really learned a few good things from this article.

Today, an electrical power line broke and went down right in the neighbors' driveway. Such excitement! Indoor heat in the middle of the day with no fans (electric) to circulate that hot air really got my attention. Outdoor heat is just as bad, as we are having extremely high humidity at the moment. Swimming in the air, we used to call it. Blew this popsicle stand way too early for an appointment in town, just to get away from the stagnant breezeless air.

True, moving air cools one down by evaporating perspiration. But when conditions reach wet bulb stage, no such relief is possible. That's the point at which heat + humidity kill.
