Default Good Dog, Bad Food: Foods for People That Are Bad for Your Dog

If you consider the family dog, well, family—and are apt to toss him a piece of your food now and then—proceed with caution. Some foods meant for human consumption can be dangerous, and even deadly, to your dog.
How are people and animals different when it comes to food?
According to Carmela Stamper, D.V.M., a veterinarian at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an animal’s body processes food much differently. “Our bodies may break down foods or other chemicals that a dog’s can’t tolerate,” she says.

That's some really good info Islander, thanks for sharing! I will print it and share with my customers. While most of it seems to be plain old common sense, many people who have little or no experience with pets have no clue, and the animals don't always know better - they just trust whatever you give or let them have is safe.

Yes, it's a big responsibility that our pets put complete trust in us to keep them safe, yet many people have no idea what's unsafe for their pet. Glad you found this helpful for your customers.

The article mentioned, but did not emphasize, that xylitol (poisonous for dogs) is an ingredient in many brands of peanut butter. Not too many dogs can resist eating peanut butter, of course not knowing that it is very unhealthy for them.

One popular food item that I warn people about not giving to their pets is mushrooms. In fact, just a few days ago we had some frozen Risotto from Trader Joe's, and even though we ate all the mushrooms in it and there was only risotto left over, after we gave it to our dogs they both developed pretty bad diarrhea, but can be much worse and even kill them so beware. Best to avoid them altogether.

Not mentioned anywhere, but how I lost an 8-y-o German Shepherd: He was snacking on the cat candy in the litterbox. Evidently there is something in cat doots that is harmful to a dog's liver. Sadly, the diagnosis came too late to save my beloved dog.
