Perth researchers are investigating if the spice saffron can soothe troubled teenagers with depression and anxiety. Although saffron and turmeric have been shown to help adults with depression, this is the first study in adolescents.
Murdoch University will test saffron in 12 to 16-year-olds.
Saffron is thought to remove free radicals from the body and in turn lead to increased levels of the “happy hormone” serotonin.
Clinical psychologist Adrian Lopresti, from Murdoch’s school of psychology and exercise science, said turmeric and saffron worked in different ways.
