Default Antidepressants In Pregnancy Tied To Autism

A new study provides one more reason to think twice about these powerful drugs, especially if you are pregnant.
After extensive reports showing the negative effects of antidepressants, this new study, which looked at nearly 150,000 babies, has found a link between antidepressants taken during pregnancy and autism in young children. Children of women who took antidepressants during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy were 87% more likely to develop autism than kids born to women who didn’t take the drugs.

It seems like simple logic to me to avoid any unnecessary medical interventions during pregnancy, including prescription drugs and vaccinations.

My daughter had depression during pregnancy. Her doctor relieved her depression with large doses of folic acid, instead of antidepressants. I don't know much about the degrees of depression, but I believe she had a "milder" form. So, this may be why the B vitamin--folic acid--was successful. Folate, from green leafy veggies, probably would have helped too, but she wasn't eating properly. I was thrilled when the folic acid worked for her. Perhaps, depending on circumstances, folic acid should be the first choice before resorting to antidepressants.

Another example of how the natural world provides answers to our health issues that are more effective and safer then pharmaceuticals. Mr. Wizard, your daughter was fortunate to have found such a wise doctor.

"...she wasn't eating properly." We role-model for our children, but sometimes it takes them years to figure out that Mom and Dad were onto something after all. (In some cases, I'm still waiting....)

Yeah, I was pleased her doc opted for a vitamin before jumping to drugs, especially given she was pregnant. I've also seen similar situations with her pediatrician, who refuses to give her children drugs before trying other remedies. About a year ago, the pediatrician raised the idea of giving my 11 yr. old granddaughter the HPV vaccine. Based on info. I'd shared with my daughter and SIL awhile ago, they refused the vaccine. To the pediatrician's credit, he has not revisited the matter since.
