Permanently cutting the daily calories you consume may turn out to have a profound effect on your future life, according to some tantalising scientific studies.

In a restaurant setting sometime in the not-too distant future, a man and a woman are on their first date. After the initial nerves subside, all is going well.

The woman replies that she is 52, has been married, divorced, and has children in their early 20s. He had no idea — she looked his age, or younger.

Interesting but not surprising. The concept of calorie restriction tied to longevity is not new, and it certainly works. The trouble is, most of us are too fond of our cuisine to limit ourselves to 1000 calories a day, or to prolonged fasting. Much as I want to live a long active life, part of the joy of living is dining. Sometimes a restrictive lifestyle can make your life seem longer!

This article uses the terms "eating less" and "calorie restriction" interchangeably. These are not the same thing. One can eat less food and still gain weight if the foods are high in calories. One can increase the caloric intake of a 3 oz. chicken breast by 240 calories by smothering it with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. All oils are high in fat & calories, although healthy in the proper amount. Life extension is promoted by "calorie restriction," not just eating less. The difference is subtle, but critical.

Good points. The article doesn't make the distinction clear. Thanks, Mr. Wiz.
