Default Coconut Oil Bad For You?

    No. Just the opposite.

Given the evidence favoring coconut oil, why is a new report from the American Heart Association (AHA) promoting this falsehood? And why is the media spreading it with headlines like “Coconut Oil Isn’t the Miracle Food You Thought It Was” and “Coconut Oil Isn’t Healthy. It’s Never Been Healthy.”
None of this is a departure for the AHA; they’ve been saying the same thing since the early 1960’s: saturated fats are bad because they raise low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which the AHA claims is a leading cause of atherosclerosis (plaque building up in arteries). The Association also believes saturated fats should be replaced with polyunsaturated fats like margarine and vegetable oils, and, in their new report, they claim this switch can reduce cardiovascular disease risk by 30%.
This is a stunning finding, but stunningly wrong.

I thought this comprehensive article deserved its own thread, rather than tacking it onto the current discussion.

This one seems to be one of the more well thought out of the many satisfactory rebuttals that I have read. Now if only our locally produced coconut oil were available at a remotely competitive price, I would be a happy camper.

It seems reasonable...to me....that large organizations, like the American Heart Assoc. (AHA), the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), etc. are not going to advocate anything antithetical to their donors' financial interests. Donors, like Big Food, Big Pharma, etc., really call the shots of these organizations. Follow the money......

LDL has been unfairly demonized in popular articles. Actually all forms of cholesterol play important roles; your body needs cholesterol but it's hard to debunk that old "evil cholesterol" myth. Healthy fats (including saturated fats from organically grown meats and poultry, olive oil, coconut oil) are necessary. People's health deteriorates on a fat-free diet!
