Default Flacking For GMOs: How The Biotech Industry Cultivates Positive Media

    July 1 2017

In April 2016, Monica Eng of WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR station, published a critical story revealing that the agrichemical giant Monsanto had quietly paid a professor at the University of Illinois to travel, write, and speak about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and even to lobby federal officials to halt further GMO regulation. In a grueling, year-long reporting project, Eng uncovered documents proving that Monsanto made the payments to University of Illinois professor Bruce Chassy, and that he advised Monsanto to deposit money in the university’s foundation, where records are shielded from public disclosure.

It was about this same time, as I recall, that Kevin Folta at the University of Florida was exposed for doing that very thing. He was blogging for a pro-biotech site, "GMO Answers," using content supplied by Monsanto, and generously reimbursed for his efforts, it was exposed.

This is an old tactic right out of "Big Tobacco's" playbook. The hard truth is almost all "industry advocates" (regardless of industry...even the organic consumer assoc.) are generally funded by their industry. So, we have to take what they say with a grain of salt.

The trouble is that these few examples are not isolated instances. The industry also hires Internet trolls to invade any discussion on the topic, whether comments at the end of an article, astroturfing on Facebook or responding to letters to an editor. The Internet is alive with them.

In today's world, most people probably grasp the meaning of the word "troll" in internet terms. Quite few ordinary people understand that these trolls are not merely individuals who disagree with the predominant views of the group that the troll has infiltrated. Disagreement and discussion are fine; the fact that these trolls are paid by corporations is the part that has escaped the vast majority of people who encounter them.
