Betaine HCl is a supplement linked with many health claims.
In particular, improving poor digestion from low stomach acid.
But are these claims backed by science? Is it safe and effective?
This article explores the current evidence for betaine HCl supplementation.

    What is Betaine HCl?
Betaine hydrochloride (HCl) is a dietary supplement made from a combination of betaine and hydrochloric acid.
Betaine (also called trimethylglycine) is found in certain foods and is also a product of choline metabolism.

What a hit piece! Of course the effects of taking supplemental Hydrochloric acid are temporary; that would be the point. Long term underlying causes for illness usually take a long period of time to correct, even if the actual root cause has been found. Why would anyone want to deny people the enhanced ability to digest and to assimilate their necessary nutrients, especially their minerals, which might support the resolution of the root cause of their illness?

Don't get me started on the contempt dripping from the phrase "patient testimonials". Whoever could possibly give any credence to the experiences of those silly patients (sarcasm).

Betaine HCl is inexpensive, supports the metabolism of many other nutrients, and is quite easy for the "patient" to figure out an appropriate dosage, based of the size of meal being eaten, and the macro-nutrient content of that meal. These people really need to save their outrage for the disabling drugs being peddled by the medical system.

Never forget that the reason pharmaceutical companies make sheet loads of money is because you are sick, or they have convinced you that you are even if you're not. A healthy population is a bad investment in politicians minds, not campaign contributions so you can WIN

Betaine HCI promotes stomach acid, but stomach acid doesn't really digest your food. The acid only softens up (denatures) the food so that digestive enzymes can digest them. Bromelain--found in fresh pineapple--is a great digestive aid. It contains several proteolytic enzymes that work great on protein. Chicken, steak, fish, or almost any protein cooked with pineapple makes for a delicious, easily digested meal. Sometimes, I eat raw chunks of pineapple with my meal like a side salad. It's natural and does what the betaine hcl facilitates. Skip the betaine and go for the pineapple.

Alas, because I live alone, I don't buy a pineapple unless I'm having guests. Too bad they don't come in small, medium & large!

Actually, they do, but the small ones never reach the commercial market. As we are nearing the end of pineapple season, the one I recently bought from a friend who grows them looked like a miniature pineapple. She had two of the little guys at the farm stand; I got one, and someone else took the other one. It now is ripe, and I have eaten half of it. Sadly, no more big pineapples for us this season.

I was introduced to betaine when I had a zinc deficiency years ago. I had to take HCL and zinc for a while, as they need to work together. Much later I discovered digestive enzymes - depending on brand these have a mixture of enzymes and can include bromelain and papain. I no longer need any of them, I'm glad to say, but they were helpful at the time.

There is one of the body's little feedback loops that the author of the article has overlooked. Zinc is a perfect example of how this works. Person becomes zinc deficient, person cannot assimilate enough zinc from foods or from supplements because of low stomach acid caused by zinc deficiency. Person takes supplemental HCl along with supplemental zinc. Person becomes healthier. Synergy works! Voila!
