Default Study on Gene-Edited Embryos Aims for Human Reproduction

Here begins the first in a series of articles on genetic manipulation of human embryos using CRISPR technology. The best one, the most detailed and informative and exploratory, is also the last and the longest… For good reason. Just an afterthought before we launch this thread: when I was teaching a college senior capstone course called "Great issues in world civilization," every year the class had a long discussion about this exact topic. At the time they may have regarded it as magical thinking, but I warned them (and this was in the 80s and 90s) that at some point after they reach voting age they may well have to take a side on the ethics surrounding exactly this issue.

    Press Statement

A paper published today in Nature reported on work led by Oregon Health & Society University (OHSU) researcher Shoukhrat Mitalipov to genetically edit human embryos, apparently with the goal of using this technique for reproductive purposes.
“This is a pivotal point in the push toward genetically modified humans,” said Marcy Darnovsky, PhD, Executive Director of the Center for Genetics and Society. “A small group of scientists and closed committees have taken it upon themselves to move forward with reproductive germline modification technologies, scorning repeated calls by scientists, scholars, regulatory bodies, and civil society organizations around the world to keep this use of genetic engineering off limits. Mitalipov and his collaborators were clearly aware of the widespread calls for democratic deliberation and public engagement on this matter, but flagrantly disregarded them.”
