Default This Hospital Prescribes Fresh Food From Its Own Farm

Five years ago, when Lankenau Medical Center was confronted with evidence that it was serving the unhealthiest county in Pennsylvania, the hospital decided to embrace the findings with an unconventional approach: building a half-acre organic farm on its campus to provide fresh produce to patients.

The teaching and research hospital just outside Philadelphia was in the midst of its own patient health needs assessment in 2011 when the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released findings about health outcomes in Pennsylvania counties.

What great ideas! One thing puzzles me: I don't see any mention of meals from the hospital's program being served to actual patients. Did anyone else think that was odd?
Some of you may know that I was hospitalized two years ago for an intestinal issue that arose from a previous cancer surgery. This hospital served its patients as much local and organic food as it could procure. The meals that came to my room were 5-star restaurant quality. Since I occasionally have errands in that city, I asked whether they served the same meals in their cafeteria because it would be a lunch destination. Sadly, no... those meals were for patients only. And I agree — with limited resources, that's the right thing to do!

Montgomery County PA might be the unhealthiest county in Pennsylvania, but Lankenau Hospital is located in Lower Merion Township, within Montgomery County. This is (or was a few years ago) the wealthiest individual township in the US. There is some sort of logical disconnect going on here that I cannot quite put my finger on, except that this is quite a large county, with much variation from one part to another; rich, poor, rural, urban, etc. Any ideas?
