Cornucopia’s Take: Genetically engineered (GE) salmon by AquaBounty have yet to hit U.S. markets, in part because the FDA has yet to come out with their GE labeling law. Funding behind the GE salmon appears to be nearly infinite, and AquaBounty is determined to wait out legislators and policies. While it is likely that these fish will make it to U.S. markets at some point, many retailers have already stated they will not carry the controversial fish, and modern salmon breeding has already produced fish that mature as quickly as the AqaBounty fish. We will continue to monitor this story as it unfolds.

    Organic Insider
As many of you may remember, President Obama’s Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the highly controversial genetically-engineered salmon in 2015, against the vocal opposition from millions of Americans, 40 members of Congress, and more than 300 environmental, consumer, health and animal welfare organizations, salmon and fishing groups and associations, food companies, chefs, and restaurants.

Kudos to Alaska's Senator Murkowski for her legislation. And, kudos to Whole Foods, Costco, Walmart, Aldi, Trader Joe’s and 80 other U.S. retailers that "claim" they will not carry GE-salmon. As for the concern that GE salmon will end up in schools, I don't think we have to be too concerned. Kids don't eat salmon, based on the eating habits I've observed. GE burgers, fries, etc. may be cause for concern, but salmon...well, not so much.

Too true, Mr. Wiz! Also, salmon's a bit pricey for the school lunch program!

Update on Genetically Engineered (GE) salmon. The FDA, in December 2018, issued FINAL guidelines for how GE salmon is to be labeled so the consumer knows what they're buying. The label is a circular, green & yellow sticker, with the word "bioengineered" clearly shown on the sticker. With the issuance of these guidelines, known as the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, the AquaBounty company can begin producing GE salmon for market. The company, which is growing the first GE salmon in its Indiana facility, has stated that the first GE salmon should be available on the market in late 2020.

Thanks for the update, Mr. Wiz. IIRC, that label was the final result of several years' worth of contention and a number of state attempts to force GMO labeling. I suspect most woke people know what GMO means, and concerned shoppers look for the NON-GMO label or the ORGANIC designation. But the average shopper? I'm pretty sure most folks have no idea what "bioengineered" means, nor would they equate it with GMO. Would they even care?
