Default Mind Tactics On Doctors Are Tripling Opiod Prescription Prescribing

    August 3 2018

Tactics from the world of behavioural science are being used on doctors to encourage them to prescribe more drugs, such as statins, opioids and the flu vaccine.
Doctors who are exposed to techniques such as 'nudges' triple the number of prescriptions they write out, a new study has discovered.

Nudges and other techniques from the world of behavioural science are being built into software systems that doctors access when they are treating patients. Two common 'nudges' are reminders at the point when the doctor decides on the next steps and later when their prescribing levels are compared to those of other doctors.

That just feels sleazy. Also: why are doctors still prescribing statins? Isn't it well understood that the danger of cholesterol is a myth? I thought that was universally known by now. Guess not.

I have seen a cardiologist a couple of times who wanted to prescribe statins - but couldn't really tell me why or what they would do! So no, it's not universally known, far from it.

Well, what doctors know is that statins are a "cash cow," with sales of more than $19 Billion (with a "B") last year (2017). And, predicted to grow to more than $24 Billion by 2022....just 4 yrs. from now. This is what doctors know. This is why they keep prescribing these ......pills.

Sorry, but this is what most docs do now.....prescribe pills. This is what they're taught in med school. There are some really good docs, who care and will incorporate advice on lifestyle, dietary changes, etc. But, most make money by prescribing pills. It's part of the compensation package.

And consider that most ongoing education for doctors is in the hands of the pharmaceutical companies. I don't know whether or not ongoing ed is obligatory for doctors, but my guess would be that is it; I know it is for lawyers, at least in some states.

Speaking of statins, in another article on the same site I saw this, which makes the amount of statins aggressively pushed and ignorantly prescribed almost beyond belief: "In fact, explosive new evidence has now linked the development of cataracts to one of the most ubiquitous drugs used by the over-50s: statins." https://www.wddty.com/magazine/2017/...020-at-80.html

Also, the title of the article of this thread is slightly misleading--the evidence (hence, the 'tripling') refers to statins, but the same tactics are used for opiods and other drugs and procedures. Not that this changes the facts in the article; I point it out in the interest of accuracy.

@Pattypans: Excellent point. The pharmaceutical industry plays a major role in the continuing education of med docs. But, it also has compelling control over the roughly 150 or so medical schools nationwide, including major contributions to medical school research, endowment of certain professorships, sponsoring medical conferences all year long and paying handsomely for lecturers who sell med students on the latest drugs, etc. The umbilical cord between the pharmaceutical industry and medical schools is so well entrenched at this point it's impossible to sever.
