Default Saunas, The Hot Cure All

Some like it hot. . .and perhaps more should because taking a regular sauna can have a big impact on our health. It protects against heart disease, lung problems, mental health disorders and, not surprisingly with all that, it also helps us live longer

If that wasn't enough, sauna bathing also helps improve skin conditions, arthritis, headaches and the flu, say researchers from the University of Eastern Finland.

The researchers brought together all the previously-published research into sauna bathing, which involves brief exposure to very high temperatures, usually in the 80 to 100 degrees C range.

Where's the sequel about jumping into cold water? Or isn't that part of the protocol any more?

We are not big on saunas in Oz - we get enough hot weather not to need them. I think I could probably get the same result if I sat in my car in summer with the windows up. It gets hellishly hot!

Speaking of heat, this year is the hottest summer I can ever recall in New England, and also the most humid, it's so oppressive that we had to actually turn on the AC instead of opening windows. Supposed to let up a bit in coming days, we'll see.

I, like most people, hate to sweat. But, it's essential for good health. So, saunas serve a great purpose, unless you're a man trying to have a child. There's research that shows sauna heat reduces a man's sperm count. It's not irreversible, but it takes about 5 weeks after a hot sauna for a man to recover normal sperm production. A guy using a sauna on a regular basis could be unknowingly practicing birth control.

Good point, Mr. Wizard. And for similar reason, gentlemen hoping to become fathers should avoid tight underwear, working with a laptop on their actual lap, and carrying a cell phone in a pants pocket.
