Re Australia, I saw steam technology used at least 20 years ago, but it didn't take off at the time. Friends who ran an organic vegetable garden used a gas flame weeder on the back of the tractor, and I had a small one for home use. I wrote about these in a national agricultural newspaper, but no-one took up the cause to develop technology cheap enough to make it attractive. Now it looks as though it might get somewhere - though spraying will still be cheaper.
