I'm glad to see them mentioning side effects. One rarely thinks of side effects pertaining to dietary supplements.

Islander, I thought it was a fair, balanced article that gave both sides, which is as you say, pretty unusual.

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) and Grape seed extract (GSE) are often confused. Grape seed is typically from wine grapes. That they both have the same abbreviation (GSE) adds to the confusion. When purchasing, be careful not to just ask for GSE...for obvious reasons. Some of the health benefits are similar but they differ too. For example, grape seed has lots more polyphenols, providing the whole red wine--resveratrol--effect of improving circulation, and fighting against glycation. I've used both but can't tell whether I benefitted or not. Lol.

I read recently about a study that showed grape seed extract was very beneficial for the liver, which is the major cleansing organ in the body. The study compared a group of people taking 2,000 mg. of vitamin C a day to a group taking grape seed (can't remember the amount). After 3 months, the group taking grape seed had a 46% reduction in liver toxicity compared to no change for the group taking vit. C. Almost everything we consume gets filtered through the liver. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is becoming more common because of our poor diet & increased pharmaceutical drugs, pollutants, etc., which all get filtered through the liver. So, anything that helps protect & detox the liver is great.
