Default The Family That Built an Empire of Pain

An addiction specialist said that the Sacklers’ firm, Purdue Pharma, bears the “lion’s share” of the blame for the opioid crisis.
The north wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a vast, airy enclosure featuring a banked wall of glass and the Temple of Dendur, a sandstone monument that was constructed beside the Nile two millennia ago and transported to the Met, brick by brick, as a gift from the Egyptian government. The space, which opened in 1978 and is known as the Sackler Wing, is also itself a monument, to one of America’s great philanthropic dynasties. The Brooklyn-born brothers Arthur, Mortimer, and Raymond Sackler, all physicians, donated lavishly during their lifetimes to an astounding range of institutions, many of which today bear the family name: the Sackler Gallery, in Washington; the Sackler Museum, at Harvard; the Sackler Center for Arts Education, at the Guggenheim; the Sackler Wing at the Louvre; and Sackler institutes and facilities at Columbia, Oxford, and a dozen other universities. The Sacklers have endowed professorships and underwritten medical research. The art scholar Thomas Lawton once likened the eldest brother, Arthur, to “a modern Medici.” Before Arthur’s death, in 1987, he advised his children, “Leave the world a better place than when you entered it.”

Fascinating read!! Thanks for posting. So, the main culprit of the opioid crisis can be traced back to the Sackler family. Their company--Purdue Pharma--has generated more than $35 Billion from sales of their product, "OxyContin" since it was introduced in 1995. OxyContin has helped push the Sackler family's net worth to more than $13 Billion, exceeding the Rockefellers and the Mellons. The sole ingredient of OxyContin is oxycodone,..." a cousin to heroin and twice as powerful as morphine." More than 200,000 people have died in the U.S. from oxycontin and other opioids since 1999. I would like to give the three Saclker brothers (all medical doctors) the benefit of the doubt and allow that they really didn't know the extent of harm that would result from their product, oxycontin. But, there were other doctors and experts "sounding the alarms" loud and clear, warning against such powerful drugs. Of course, their warnings were dismissed, primarily because the Sacklers had enough money to drown out their warings. Sad that greed is almost always the root of human suffering. Now that the opioid "genie is out of the bottle," there's no going back.

In this case it was easy - I remembered because it was my son who sent me the article. Not so good at other times!

Julieanne, thanks for the 2017 article on the Sacklers. Very illuminating because I had not made the connection between their MS-Contin product (sustained-release morphine, targeted at cancer patients) being the forerunner of their later OxyContin product. It seems these companies win government and market approval by targeting their most addictive and dangerous products to "cancer patients." Like MS-Contin, the opioid drug fentanyl is targeted for cancer patients. Unfortunately, fentanyl is the most addictive opioid, responsible for nearly half of all opioid deaths in the U.S. in 2017. Unlike MS-Contin and OxyContin, fentanyl is "fully synthetic," and 10 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.
