Default Pediatric Organization Finally Admits Food Colors Damage Children's Health

Before adding food color to your child’s next birthday cake or rewarding them with that neon-colored baked good from the local bakeshop, you might want to reconsider. After decades of research linking food colors and dyes to harmful health conditions in children, finally the American Academy of Pediatrics admits food colorings are not the harmless stuff most people consider them to be and may actually be dangerous to children.

The American Pediatric Associtation has known "for decades" that food coloring can be harmful to children. Now, after millions of kids are being treated for ADHD and the like, the organization wants parents to know about the link. The color genie is out of the bottle now. Children love colors, the more brilliant, brighter the better. How do you now wean kids off of color. Try giving a kid a colorless birthday cake, or a plain cupcake. Again,...the things we willingly do to our children in the name of greed.

Years ago, when we had a big house and a diversified farm, we took in foster children. At one time we had a pair of siblings; the boy had been diagnosed with ADD, but the social worker told me that as long as I kept artificial ingredients, especially sugar, out of his diet, he would be fine. This proved to be true. And at 8 years old he was remarkably compliant and never complained when, for instance, his Halloween basket was sorted and the candy substituted with apples, popcorn and toys. He went off the rails only twice: once when he got into his sister's Halloween candy and once when he raided her stacks of Girl Scout cookies waiting to be sold. The point: kids will do without if they understand why it's important.

Good point. I just think raising children today is a tough enough job without also having to police daily the growing number harmful ingredients in your child's diet. And, sadly artificial chemicals and food coloring are added to kids' cereals and other foods in the name of "profit."

Yup, eye appeal. I do believe that excess sugar and shortened recess time are responsibly for the majority of ADD and ADHD diagnoses. My 8-y-o grandson isn't hungry for full meals and frequently is allowed to leave and return to the dinner table during the meal... because he snacks all day on those neon-colored dry cereal bits. Other behaviors are sometimes problematic as well.
