Default The Foods That Tell Your Brain To Stop Snacking

Snacking is the downfall for most of us trying to lose weight—but there are some foods that trick the brain into making us feel full, scientists have discovered.
Brain cells known as tanycytes regulate our appetite, and they respond to two key amino acids that are especially found in more than 20 foods such as sirloin steak, chicken, mackerel, apricots, avocados and lentils.

Adding these foods to your diet sends messages to the tanycytes, and tells us we're full. That could also mean we're less likely to snack between meals.

They just could have stated which two amino acids communicate with the tanycytes. But noooo...

Well naturally, sirloin steak, mackerel, apricots and avocados are my daily fare. [Thinly veiled sarcasm. These are all costly — too rich for my blood, except when avocados are on sale].

Drinking plenty of water can also stop the brain to think about snacking.

I have two apricot trees, but it's a short season, and have to be quick to beat the birds. Avocados are cheap in winter here in Oz, I eat them most days - but still have memory problems! Sirloin steak (does it have to be sirloin?) and mackerel are never on the menu. I do get cheaper cuts and tenderize them with a papaw-based tenderizer to cook in a stir fry sometimes.

Julieanne, I too have occasional memory problems; I think it's a natural part of aging. I read somewhere recently that a cup of dark leafy greens or an orange veg daily can reverse memory problems (and added to your dog's food once or twice a week, can extend the pet's lifespan). I'm trying to do this. I have plenty of greens... but I also like a little variety in my meals!

    Lol. What Maurya said!!
The two amino acids that work with tanycyte brain cells to control appetite are...."arginine and lysine." These aminos are present in far more foods than the 20 offered in this article, but these are the choices with the most concentrated amounts. Read more about how it all works here:

Interesting that arginine and lysine usually work in a complementary and antagonistic relationship with each other, and must be in balance if our bodily functions are to be in balance.
