Your Vision and Books Versus Kindles Versus Computers

It’s so convenient to read a book on your Kindle, computer, or other device. You don’t have to put on your shoes and go to a bookstore to purchase your reading material; you don’t have to wait for the mail to come to deliver the book; rather, within seconds of deciding to read an interesting book, you can have it on your device; you can remain in your pajamas. Reflecting these advantages, 266 million e-books were sold in the US in 2017.1 In fact, if you prefer turning pages by hand and so order the print version from Amazon (which owns 40 percent of the book market), you’ll still have the option to start reading online right away while you wait for the print version to arrive in the mail.

Funny... of all the options she mentions for acquiring reading material, there is no mention of the public library. I would be lost without my local library! (And Interlibrary Loan, for the books my library doesn't own).

Me too! I very rarely buy books these days and rely heavily on my local library for reading material. We have a small book club, where instead of all reading the same book, we discuss what books we have been reading that month. It's a great way to hear about new and interesting books.

To my surprise, over 687 million "printed" books were sold in the U.S. in 2017. This equals almost 3 books for every single adult in the U.S. I'm impressed. Never would have guessed such a high number, especially given all the other ways people can acquire reading materials today. I prefer holding a book and turning pages, and love bookmarks and dog ear pages.

I wonder if all those books include school books? That would bump up the number.

The sales data didn't specify. But you raise a very legitimate point. Forgot schools still purchase some books for students. But, the secondary schools are providing students with IPads, computers, kindles, etc. So, I know book purchases are declining for high schoolers. But, you raise an excellent point.
