Default 12 Reasons To Eat More Seaweed

Seaweed is rarely featured in most North Americans’ diet but perhaps it should. That’s because seaweed is packed with critical vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, and offers a whole host of health benefits. In fact, many types of seaweed are among the healthiest foods we can eat, but few people eat them outside of their nori rolls at their favorite Japanese restaurant.

Here are some of the best health benefits and reasons you should consider eating a variety of seaweed, including: nori, kelp, wakame, dulse, kombu and others.

I buy dried seaweed/kelp, aka dulse, from my local food co-op for an added source of iodine. Quality seafood sources of iodine are rare here in the desert southwest , most being fishfarmed.

Living so near the coast, I suppose you think I should be out there harvesting fresh seaweed. Not as simple as it might sound. Seaweed clings to rocks and it's pretty treacherous footing. I do know people will go out with a tool, maybe a manure fork, and bring back truckloads of seaweed for mulching their gardens. Wish I could do that too! On the West Coast, not only do they forage seaweed, there are classes to take on gathering and cooking! https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt...among-foragers

Like Grulla, I can find dried kelp, kombu, nori and other species at any of the three local natural foods stores. There's also something called "Vitamin Sea" that contains a variety of seaweed flakes. I add a few pinches to salads, soups, stews and stirfrys for the added vitamins, minerals and especially iodine. After reading some of these articles (https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/sea-veggies), I'm tempted to try soaking some of the larger forms, just for fun.

"Living so near the coast, I suppose you think I should be out there harvesting fresh seaweed." Gee whiz "Islander", with all the climate change and rising sea levels, you might be able to eventually harvest kelp right in your own backyard garden.

LOL. I'll stick to tomatoes, peppers and those leafy greens!

I used to harvest seaweed for the garden when I lived closer to the coast. It is no longer allowed for environmental reasons. I do use Seasol, a very concentrated form of seaweed fertiliser.

UPDATE: Here is how one can harvest their own seaweed as long as it's not illegal:
    https://www.ecowatch.com/how-to-harv...1#rebelltitem1

"You want the freshest possible seaweed, not the stuff that washed up weeks ago and is piled up in a stinking mat of debris at the high tide line."

That washed up seaweed sounds to me like this may be a good and legal source for mulching one's garden, especially where regulated like in Oz...no???

And watch out for those "pesky" sharks:

Given the increasing pollution levels of our water, we need to be careful with seaweed. Most seaweed, like other sea vegetables, contain some level of heavy metals. A few years ago, Britain, Canada & New Zealand warned the public about the high inorganic arsenic levels in hijiki seaweed, ultimately banning the stuff. I don't even think the U.S. bothered to assess.

I have a few jars of pre-Fukushima seaweeds of various types which I guard jealously and parcel out to myself in small amounts. I view these as though they are precious as gold, or perhaps like 100 year old wine.
