Default Body Fat Increases Cancer Risk

Obesity is a well-known risk factor for many kinds of cancer. So, if your weight is in the normal range and you’re not even close to obese, you might think you are relatively safe. But are you really? It turns out that new research shows that, for at least one form of cancer, just having a little excess body fat might be a more important predictor than weight.
The study, which was conducted at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, found that older women who have higher levels of body fat may have an increased risk of developing breast cancer, even if their body mass index is in the normal range.1

From what I've read, it seems belly fat is the worst factor for a number of conditions. It also depends on whether you have a lot of brown fat or white fat, and I don't know how you would know that, without an expensive procedure.

Agree with Julieanne. Belly fat is the real culprit....also known as "visceral" fat....because it's concentrated in the abdominal area close to vital organs, like the liver, pancreas, etc. But, the key point is visceral or belly fat is so dangerous because it is "active" fat, altering the normal function of hormones in the body. It's the altering of the hormones that influences or contributes to cancer...not only of the breast, but heart disease and other conditions. You don't need an expensive test to determine whether you have too much visceral fat. If a woman's waist measures more than 35 inches or man's more than 40 inches, you can bet you have too much visceral fat. Ironically, thin people can have to much visceral fat too. So, if you're thin, but you have a belly bulge that's out of proportion with the rest of your upper body chances are you have too much visceral fat too.

As usual, Mr Wizard has put the whole thing succinctly into a nut shell. Thank you.

Presenting information succinctly is a skill I've tried to mimic from you. Will be glad when you have more access. Wish you were here more often. Miss your words of wisdom.
