Default Type 1 Diabetes: Keto vs Insulin?

    January 16 2016

You’re unlikely to have missed the fact that the airwaves are awash with information, for and against, low carb high fat (LCHF) or ketogenic diets for type 2 diabetes. But what if you’re among the 1 in 10 diabetics that have type 1 diabetes (T1D) or Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of the Adult (LADA)? Whilst you can find bits and pieces online if you conduct your own searches, there’s precious little about it in the mainstream media. You aren’t likely to hear much from your doctor either about using diet (and lifestyle) to lower your insulin needs. Let’s face it – you’re channelled straight into a drug-based solution.
    T1D: big business

Why, you might ask? Without being too cynical, it’s probably because the global T1D market is expected to reach USD 25.52 billion by 2024.

Well, I missed that because I don't have a television and the news that comes from NPR apparently skipped that soundbite. What's interesting to me is that I never knew that prior to the use of insulin, type one diabetics depended upon a ketogenic diet. And I assume they still could halve their insulin dependence by doing so again.

But here is one of my pet peeves showing up again: "When you eat less carbs, you need less insulin." Somebody needs a better editor. It's fewer for what you can count, less for what you can't. Fewer carbs. Get it?

I am not the grammar police; I prefer the term Alt-Write!

I'm with you, Islander, and have even taken up editing and proofreading in my 'old age'.

The article references "Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults" (LADA), which is a subset of Type 1 diabetes. LADA is very often mis-diagnosed as Type 2 because it develops later in life, typically between 30 - 50 yrs of age. If the doc tells you that you're Type 2 diabetic, ask to have two tests: 1. a C-peptide test, and 2. a thyroid test. The C-peptide test measures the amount of insulin your pancreas produces. C-peptide levels are generally lower in LADA patients than type 2 patients. Thyroid disease is more prevalent in LADA patients compared to those with type 2 diabetes. So, there's a good chance that if your C-peptide levels are low and thyroid disease is present that you may have LADA (a subset of type 1) rather than type 2 diabetes.

And I used to do paid editing and transcribing for Mike Adams until he went off the rails.
