• It is necessary for 3 to 6 months to elapse before any improvements are demonstrable, and for the most part these seems to be small. But more importantly,

4.8 million kids under 18 yrs. old is alarming. Sadly, no one knows the exact cause of asthma in children, probably because there are a number of contributing factors. I grew up with a boy who had severe eczema; he also had asthma. Over the years, I've encountered many children with eczema, who also had asthma. So, I'm wondering is asthma a "stand alone" health condition in young children, or is there some accompanying health condition--known & unknown--that gives rise to the asthma. I have two grandchildren with asthma (fortunately both are well controlled), but they both have other health conditions, as well.

Well, it depends. One longitudinal study showed that about two thirds of children with asthma may grow out of it. The big caveat is how severe it is. Most children who grow out of it experience mild cases during childhood and have no accompanying allergies and/or eczema. Children who are less likely to grow out of it, have the following: moderate to severe asthma, allergic to pet dander, pollen, & dust, and/or has eczema. Also, asthma tends to run in families. So, if a parent or both have asthma, it is less likely a child will grow out of it. Lots of caveats, but, in general, about 66% of children with asthma can grow out of it.
