Default What's The Difference: Blueberries Vs Wild Blueberries

Wild blueberries have been part of the native North Americans diet for centuries. Cultivated blueberries are juicier and are available fresh all year, while small wild blueberries are almost always found in the freezer (if you’re lucky). We know that both wild blueberries and cultivated blueberries have many health benefits. Research shows that the wild blueberry is packed full of more nutrients than cultivated blueberries.

I am fortunate to live in blueberry country with relatively easy access to organic fresh wild blueberries in late summer. We have been doing group orders for years, where I collect cash upfront and then drive out to the barrens to bring back 100 pounds or so of boxed berries. Most berries to go directly to the freezer, but some usually are made into jams and jellies, and in my case, wine.

The bilberry, a close relative to the blueberry, also grows wild and domesticated in northern Europe and North America. My integrative doctor recently recommended bilberry extract supplement for my eye health, in high(er) dosage, something that my ophthalmologist had not thought of. https://draxe.com/bilberry/

I just checked my recently purchased container of organic blueberries to see if they were wild or cultivated. Can't tell. No indication either way....just says organic from California. Oh well, I'm going to assume they're wild and eat up. Lol. But, with the next purchase, I will be looking for wild.

A size comparison can usually tell. Wild berries are always smaller (but more highly packed with nutrients).
